Defederating your Microsoft 365 tentant from GoDaddyUpdated 9 months ago
How did you get here?
If you originally purchased your Microsoft 365 subscription from GoDaddy, then you're probably used to a few quirks that most direct Microsoft 365 customers do not face:
- You are forced to log in to your Microsoft email using GoDaddy credentials
- You are forced to use the very-limited GoDaddy administrative interface instead of the official Microsoft 365 admin portal.
- You are limited in the number of integrations you can implement with your Microsoft 365 tenant
If you find yourself wishing that you had originally purchased directly from Microsoft instead of GoDaddy, then you're in luck; there is an easy path to get away from GoDaddy without losing any of your email, calendar, or one-drive data... Defederation.
How to Defederate your Microsoft 365 tenant
There are two ways to “defederate” your 365 tenant from GoDaddy and move it to a direct Microsoft relationship.
Option #1 - Ask GoDaddy support to do it for you via their support system.
- This method takes a few days, but requires almost zero effort on your part
- You will basically ask GoDaddy to "release" from GoDaddy control into the care of Microsoft.
- Simply follow the instructions on the following GoDaddy article - https://www.godaddy.com/help/move-my-microsoft-365-email-away-from-godaddy-40094
Option #2 - Use Powershell to defederate yourself
This method is faster than Option #1, but requires some technical expertise on your part
You will use the powershell method described on the following site - https://tminus365.com/defederating-godaddy-365/
Both of the above methods use a similar process behind the scenes. In the first method, GoDaddy runs the commands on your behalf while in the second you run them yourself.
